Oedipus el Rey

The time is the present; the place is a California prison system and a Los Angeles barrio. Oedipus’s makes his epic journey along Highway 99, venturing from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Oedipus struggles against his tragic fate, all the while accompanied by a chorus of prison inmates. Luis Alfaro’s modern interpretation of Sophocles’ ancient tragedy is poetic and powerful, a modern-day myth.

Teatro del Pueblo and Pangea World Theater are once again collaborating to bring Luis Alfaro's Oedipus el Rey to the stage, March 10-27, 2011. Alfaro's modern adaptation puts an interesting spin on Sophocles' classic tragedy. Set in the California penitentiary system and a barrio in Los Angeles, Oedipus el Rey is a truly riveting production.

$1 for Japan: One dollar from each ticket of Oedipus el Rey will be donated to the Red Cross in Japan to fund relief efforts in the tsunami- and earthquake-devastated areas. "In response to the devastation in Japan, we are contributing a portion of our tickets towards relief efforts. As artists we must respond tot he time, space, environment in which we live and in which we craft our art. That's what we believe." -Dipankar Mukherjee, director of Oedipus el Rey
